Free RPG Day: Primal’s Spear and Fang

Deep in the sweltering humidity of a tropical rainforest, terrible lizards, giant mammalians, and neanderthal brutes vie for dominance and survival of the fittest.

Spear and Fang from Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal

Brutal Critical. Spear can roll an additional weapon damage die when determining the extra damage for a critical hit with a melee attack.

Dinofriend. Spear has befriended Fang, an allosaurus. Fang follows and is loyal to Spear but acts independently. In combat, she rolls her own initiative and acts on her own turn. Fang allows Spear to ride her back as a mount, especially when charging into battle together.

Giant Build. Spear counts as one size larger when determining carrying capacity and the weight he can push, drag, or lift. His melee and thrown weapons deal an extra die of damage on a hit (included below).

ACTIONS

Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) piercing damage.

Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it makes a DC 13 Strength saving throw, falling prone on a failure.

Mounted Charge (Recharge 5-6).While mounted, Spear moves up to his mount’s Speed in a straight line. If at the end of the movement there is a creature within reach, the first attack Spear makes against it as part of this action has advantage.

Primal Call (1/day).While in a jungle, Spear utters a guttural roar which calls 1d6 nearby beasts to aid him. These beasts are of CR 1 or lower and arrive at the beginning of Spear’s next turn. The summoned beasts take their turns immediately following Spear’s turn in the initiative.

BONUS ACTIONS

Primal Presence. Spear urges Fang to use a reaction to make a bite, tail, or (when Fang is bloodied) a tail sweep attack. Alternatively, Spear commands up to 3 beasts summoned with his Primal Call to make one attack each by using their reaction.

Combat

Spear is often a leap-before-you-look combatant, charging headlong into battle on the back of Fang whenever possible. But Spear has a survivor’s instincts and still knows when a Primal Call for help is the right course of action.

FANG  CHALLENGE 3

HUGE BEAST (allosaurus) 700 XP
AC 14 (natural armor)
HP 57 (6d12 + 18; bloodied 28)
Speed
60 ft.
Initiative Dex +4 (14), Insight +2 (12), Perception +2 (12)

STR: 18 (+4) DEX: 18 (+4) CON: 16 (+3)
INT:
2 (-4) WIS: 14 (+2) CHA: 5 (-3)

Proficiency +2; Maneuver DC 14
Senses passive Perception 12
Languages none, but understands Spear

ACTIONS

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 4) slashing damage. If Fang moves at least 10 feet towards its target before making this attack, she gains advantage on the attack.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Tail Sweep (While Bloodied). Fang makes a tail attack against each creature within a 10 foot cone. A creature hit by the attack suffers the attack’s damage and makes a DC 14 Strength saving throw, falling prone on a failure.

Combat

Fang typically follows Spear’s ferocious lead, using her bite in close combat or tail if enemies attempt to keep their distance. When bloodied, she uses her tail sweep to clear a path in case a quick retreat is needed.

Author’s Note: I feel I may subconsciously be typecasting myself as a designer, since this is yet another example of design inspired by an animated television show. But I can’t seem to help myself. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal is just bursting with raw power and energy which fuels inspiration and practically forces my fingers to the keyboard.

In any case, I hope you enjoy my rendition of this terrifying duo for FREE RPG DAY 2026!

Also, I’m compelled to plug my current Kickstarter for the Shamanist class, live now thru July 9!! I appreciate any and all support: like/follow, share, pledge!

Thanks!
Anthony
